OKTrends – OkCupid info blog
I’ve never been that HUGE an information junkie but this blog is an amazing, unbiased database of American sociology and psychology. It’s all collected through a really inventive manner of a free online dating provider collating and publishing some of their raw numbers. Definitely spend some time here if you have it:
Beanie Babies
I’ve loved checking out Everything Is Terrible! for a while now but it’s never made me laugh out loud until today. Witness! Beanie Baby Beanie Baby:
GIFbusters
The Spaniard’s post about someone’s shot-by-shot (obsessive?) adaptation of Raiders reminded me of this animated GIF that Michael sent to me a while back. Although maybe not nearly as impressive as the Raiders one, it still flows pretty well and covers all the important parts. Although it’s too bad they forgot the gum falling out of the test subject’s mouth when he’s electrocuted by Venkman in the beginning. I’ve tried checking out the web address displayed in the image to find out more about the author but the site is dead. www.barbelith.co.uk, right? Anyone know anything about anything?

Thenks! I am Waiting for answer!!!
So I’ve been getting a pattern of these spambot(?) comments on the blog. Here’s a few:
Hi. Just more question. Realy, please, need your help.
My sickly old dad didnt read the label on the energy drink can before opening it and giving it to my 3 year?Thenks. I am Waiting for answer!!!

Hello. Just one more question. Realy, please, help me.
Whiskey and Scotch the main difference?
100 times thenks. I am Waiting for answer!!!

They’re annoying but they’re more funny than malicious. Like when an 8 year old kid gets really angry at you. I really appreciate the “Thenks, bro.” on the second one. But what’s the point here? This isn’t malware is it? It’s not spam because there’s no link, nothing to be sold, etc. If I reply to these comments does it open up some horrible hole in the space-spam continuum and suck this site in? I prefer to believe that it’s just some helpless guy who looks to be having a lot of trouble at his house party and is looking for some last-minute advice.
Fuck Susan Boyle.
By now I assume (or if your aunt is on the internet at all) you have already witnessed Susan Boyle’s “moving performance” on ‘So you think you’ve got talent?’ I watched it and I’ll admit that it was very beautiful. She is an amazing singer (I hope I didn’t ruin the surprise for you) but fuck this groundswell of emotional support that she’s receiving. By being impressed by her performance it seems to me like we’re implying that we should first always assume that ugly people have no talent and be surprised and moved when they actually do. I’d have preferred people be impressed by her ability alone and not have her homeliness be such a huge reason to believe in her. Honestly, I’m much more impressed when “beautiful people” have actual talent. (“Wow, Brad Pitt is actually a really GOOD actor!”)
How To Copy and Paste
I think this is so fascinating. While looking for Cut&Paste I stumbled across this random page, How To Copy and Paste. I don’t mean to highlight this page to point and laugh at it (although I did when I first found it) because it’s actually a fairly thorough walk-through of how to copy and paste. But what’s interesting to me is that this function is now such a part of our cultural experience that it IS laughable to some that anyone doesn’t know how to do this. We’re so tied to the computer now as a basic everyday tool that a fairly advanced function like key commands is considered pedestrian. But thankfully someone out there thought that they could help the greater good and make this page. Lucky for them and the helpless user, it comes up pretty high in a google search.
Denpa Shonen. Hooray for Hulu.
It seems to me that at around the same time that the internet started becoming THE internet, Japanese game shows started getting their reputation here as being completely fucked up/hilarious. I’m guessing there’s a pretty direct correlation there.
I never knew the name of the show at the time but the most notable one I remember hearing about stripped it’s winning contestant naked and forced him to live locked in an apartment with only sweepstakes entries to survive on. Sadistic, embarrassing, heartwarming and hilarious. Everything Japanese game shows were know for. (And, if you think about it, kind of what most American television programming began getting known for in the 2000’s.) I think all that was available online at that time were a few lousy dithered GIFs and a bad Quicktime file or two but now, NOW we have Hulu. And, god bless ‘em, Hulu’s got the entire season of ‘Denpa Shonen’ with it’s lovable, naked contestant Nasubi and an entire two seasons of sadistic Japanese sweet hilarity. HOORAY FOR INTERWEB & HULU! (and hooray for my friend Brian for forwarding this on to me who doesn’t have a website and I think has even deleted his facebook account so he doesn’t get a link so fuck him anyway!)
